چکیده

Collapse of roof could cause severe economic loss and poses safety risk to residents in the building. This paper presents a nonlinear dynamic analysis of steel framed roof structures with force limiting devices under combined static and transient wind loading. Two types of force limiting devices – one with selfcentering behavior and the other exhibiting bilinear-like hysteresis are examined for roof collapse prevention. A nonlinear dynamic analysis that accounts for both material and geometrical nonlinearities was carried out for this simulation study. Two types of steel framed roof structures – a K-series steel joist and an arch truss are selected as the prototype roof frame in this study. It is found that installing force limiting devices at intentionally weakened zone of the prototype steel framed roof structures helps mitigating the displacement demand of the roof frame structure under transient up-lift wind pressure and thus reduce the dynamic collapse risk. Furthermore, the force limiting devices with self-centering behavior minimizes the residual deflection of the roof structures after the wind event. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Modeling of Dynamic Behavior and Estimation of Damage Incurred by Self-Centering Rocking Walls

Self-centering rocking walls are known as viable alternatives to typical shear walls, as they provide a number of solutions for eliminating seismic flaws of conventional designs. These rocking walls have a generally positive impact on the seismic behavior of structural systems, but their design makes them susceptible to concrete crushing around their base, which can lead to significantly advers...

Numerical Study of Progressive Collapse in Framed Structures: A New Approach for Dynamic Column Removal (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Progressive collapse is a situation where local failure of a primary structural component leads to the collapse of adjoining members which, in turn, leads to additional collapse. Hence, the total damage is disproportionate to the original cause. The most common local failure in framed structure is assumed to be column failure. In this paper, a new approach for dynamic column removal in framed s...

Nonlinear inelastic dynamic analysis of space steel frames with semi-rigid connections in urban buildings

Applied studies addressing semi-rigid connections have been limited. Scant information exists in regulations except little brief information. Therefore, this research analyzes the behavior of three-dimensional steel frames and semi-rigid connections based on beam-column method and non-linear dynamic analysis. Stability functions and geometric stiffness matrix were used to study the non-linear g...
